Chapter Twenty-two

Heidi was restless. She had run five miles that morning, spent an hour in the gym, had her hair cut, and still she was troubled. Maggie was out, apparently keeping an eye on the two English sisters and she was bored. She briefly flirted with the idea of searching their rooms again, but decided against it. It was most probably a waste of time. She hadn’t discovered anything useful on the other four occasions.

Much to her frustration, she hadn’t met the pair yet. It seemed their paths just wouldn’t cross, and she would have liked to know what she was up against.

Having hung around the hotel for an hour or so, becoming increasingly irritated, she decided to buy a newspaper. She still needed to finish the details of her bid, but was finding it hard to concentrate on anything.

She strolled into the soft morning light and turned left toward the shops, thinking absently how she might improve her proposal for the hotel.

Her basic premise was that she would be bringing the hotel up to date for the more discerning tourists of the twenty- first century. All rooms would have a complete facelift, with new décor and state of the art bathrooms and facilities. She would put in a contemporary gym with all mod cons and clear away some of the woodland for a bigger and better pool. With facilities like that she could practically name her price and still fill the place without any difficulty. At the same time she could put The Lost Resort on the gay world map, not to mention making a fantastic amount of cash.

The thought cheered her and her step was a little lighter as she turned left off the narrow promenade and away from the beach.

Arriving at the newsagents, she wandered into the shadowy interior. The chill air was welcome, in spite of it being so early in the year. Making her way to the news rack, Heidi turned it without a great deal of interest. She was about to pick up a copy of Die Welt, when she noticed someone pass through the front doors. It was just a passing shadow in the corner of her eye, but instantly she knew it was her; the stranger from the beach.

Beautiful, pale and brooding, Heidi had been plagued with thoughts of the woman, ever since their brief encounter. She had never seen her before, so she must be a tourist. Recalling the smooth, lean body disappearing into the obsidian depths of the sea, Heidi’s stomach flipped and she gasped involuntarily.

The stranger walked straight past her to the counter, apparently unaware of her presence. Heidi looked her up and down and instantly her heart was thumping in her chest.

She had the same grungy style; loosely fitting “boyfriend” jeans, ripped and stringy, a creased black vest top and flip flops. Heidi could see that she wore no bra and was able to discern the curve of her breast as it brushed lightly against the dark cotton of the vest.
